Bolton town centre has a market tradition stretching back over 750 years, and it’s main market has over 200 stalls. It has a reputation for being one of the North West’s premier food markets, winning numerous awards, including ‘Best Indoor Retail Market’ and ‘Tourism Retailer of the Year’. In 2012, the market underwent a £4.5million redevelopment, including a new outdoor market, major improvements to the Eastern Hall and a number of structural repairs.
The market’s redevelopment included both new build and refurbishment roofing works, and the client required a multi-disciplined contractor who could install a wide range of systems. They also needed an experienced installer who would be able to effectively carry out the project during the live trading hours. MAC Roofing were selected, and immediately implemented a planned schedule for works and deliveries that would cause the least disruption to the market traders.
The majority of the works involved the installation of Spanish slating to over 1,800m2 of the main front elevation. MAC Roofing also fitted over 1,000m2 of structural glazed roof lights and were able to safely and professionally remove the asbestos that was unexpectedly found during installation. A high performance Armourplan PVC single ply roofing system was then installed onto the market’s new extension, incorporating 120mm PIR thermal insulation, aluminium cappings, walkway and trims.
