MAC Roofing were selected to install a complete built-up waterproofing system onto this prestigious new build academy in Essex. This was the first Icopal Universal project to be carried out within Kier Eastern, and we recommended this product as a superior alternative to another single ply membrane. The seasonal cold temperatures meant that self-adhesive membranes would take time to install, and we also had to cope with a quick drying screed which did not work. This resulted in some lengthy drying out periods before work could begin.
In order to get the deck dry and enable other works to begin, MAC Roofing suggested that the VCL change to a mechanical fix option. On the main roof’s concrete deck, tapered insulation system was then used to create the necessary fall in the roof before the application of Icopal’s Universal membrane. On the Sports Hall area, flat board insulation was used, onto which the Universal membrane was mechanically fixed.
Throughout the project the MAC Team worked closely with the main contractor to ensure that programme deadlines were met and a full range of design services were provided to deliver smooth sequencing on site. Icopal’s Technical Support Team was also a key factor in the run up to this project as we had to change specifications and drawings from another manufacturer in a short space of time and then we subsequently had to change specifications during the project because of the bad weather that was encountered.
Overall, the Client was extremely pleased with the quality of installation, and also with the robust bituminous Universal membrane which created none of the issues they had experienced in the past with other single ply membranes.
